Staging Basics
Staging of bikes will start at 6:30 a.m. and continue until the Ride of the Patriots leaves at 9:00 a.m. The bikes will stage four abreast at the far right of the Eastbound lane of Fairfax Boulevard (Lee Highway U.S. Routes 50 & 29) starting at Patriot H-D and filling up from the West. Access to the staging area is best made from the West via Fairfax Boulevard. Riders coming Westbound on Fairfax Boulevard will need to proceed to the appropriate traffic light to make a U-turn and fall into the line of staged bikes. There will be plenty of Fairfax City Police Units and volunteers to guide you and protect the safety of spectators, riders and other vehicles. Any overflow of bikes will be staged on Eaton Place. A police vehicle will establish the end of the Ride of the Patriots for control purposes. See the diagram below (click the picture for a larger view).
Bikes will line up in four columns on the curb lane on Eastbound Fairfax Boulevard starting at Patriot Harley-Davidson. The safest way to approach the Staging Area is from the West, proceed slowly toward the last bikes in line and then folow the instructions of those managing the staging. Be patient. Allow sufficient space between bikes for safety. Be sure your bike is under control during the parking process. Volunteers from the Fairfax VA Chapter, Harley Owners Group will be there to help stage the bikes. They will also provide you with a card including specifics about the Ride of the Patriots.
If you are riding with friends and you want to stay reasonably close together, you should line up behind each other in the same column. It is likely that you will get separated by one bike when the columns are merged from four columns to two when we depart. You should also realize that directions when entering the RFK Stadium Parking Lot may also separate the group.
Overview of the Ride of the Patriots Staging Area
Departure Sequence
At the conclusion of the Ceremony...
- Bikers in the parking lot will return to their bikes.
- At 8:55am, the City of Fairfax Police and the Fairfax County Police Motor Squads will dispatch to assigned locations to direct traffic at intersections and control the ride to the final destination.
- PROMPTLY at 9:00am , the City of Fairfax Police Motor Squad will direct the Parking Lot Team members to release riders from the Patriot H-D parking lot. Riders will follow the Fairfax County and Washington DC Metro Police Motor Squad members down Fairfax Blvd. (Route 50) and through Fairfax Circle to Nutley and then I-66 toward Washington DC. As the main group passes under the U.S. Flag draped across Fairfax Boulevard, the American Legion Riders from Post 177 will fall in behind.
- When directed, riders staged on the street in lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be guided through the lanes of cones into lines "A" and "B" in a staggered formation (click here for a diagram). Lines "A" and "B" will join the riders from the Patriot H-D parking lot and Post 177 and the procession will continue through Fairfax Circle and down Fairfax Blvd. (Route 50).
- The Fairfax County Police Motor Squad will move the procession to the extreme left lane of Fairfax/Arlington Blvd. Riders will turn left at Nutley Street and proceed to I-66 and on to RFK Stadium.
If necessary, the Fairfax County Motor Squad will stop the column at the Pan-Am Shopping Center to insure that entire column is contiguous and ready to proceed onto I-66.
CAUTION: We will be merging four columns of bikes into two columns beginning at Patriot Harley-Davidson. Follow the directions of those in charge of this merge process to avoid any accidents and ensure the safety of spectators. The pace at this point will be very slow and steady and cones will be employed to help guide the formation. Once underway, our police escort will manage the pace at approximately 35 mph on the Interstate. See diagram.

Breakdowns In-route
A roll-back recovery vehicle may follow the Ride of the Patriots to the entrance to the RFK Stadium Parking Lot. This chase vehicle will be alert to bikers who have broken down and are stranded along the highway. If there is a problem, pull off to the shoulder, turn on the 4-way flashers and remove your helmet. The vehicle will stop, load the bike, finish the parade route to pick up any other stranded bike and then return to Patriot H-D.
The Route
Your safety is our major concern. However, each rider must take responsibility for his/her actions within the group. The Ride of the Patriots® will be escorted and managed by the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County and Washington DC Metro Motor Squads. We are indebted to their involvement and we hope you will show your respect and appreciation. The pace to the RFK Stadium Parking Lot will be slow (about 35 mph) and steady. However, gaps in the line may create higher speed situations. Helmets are REQUIRED throughout the ride.
When the ride leaves, the bikes that were staged 4 abreast will merge into 2 lanes. When merging, follow the cones and the directions of traffic managers at the merge point. Stay in your lane. Be aware of the bikes around you.
During the ride, police outriders will be positioned along the route to encourage riders to stay in line. Except for an emergency, police will only allow riders out of line at the designated exit point. Be aware that during the ride Police Motor Squad Officers will be passing the group at high rates of speed to take up new positions at the head of the formation. Stay in your lane.
An escort tow truck will be trailing the ride. If you have a problem with your bike, pull over to the right shoulder, stop, turn on your flashers and wait for the chase truck.
